Titration
A highly skilled consultant psychiatrist will conduct a thorough assessment of your ADHD. This includes a complete medical history, and an assessment using the common ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.
After your examination, you will be informed that medication may be beneficial in your particular situation. This will be discussed during your follow-up appointment (which could be in person via video link or by telephone). Your doctor will explain the different options available for you to take medication and, if you choose to start on medication we will suggest titrating the dose to maximize the balance of benefits and side effects for you.
This process may take several weeks and involves gradually adjusting your child's dosage until the appropriate balance has been achieved. It is not unusual to need to adjust three or four medications before determining the most effective one for your child's ADHD symptoms. It is essential for parents to participate in this titration process and keep an watchful eye on their child's behavior so that they can let the doctor know whether the medication is helping or causing adverse effects.
If you decide to return to NHS care the medication you take will be provided with a private prescription which you'll have to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in your consultation fees). You must attend regular appointments every six months to monitor your medication - this includes blood pressure and pulse readings. Annual reviews are also required.
Follow-up appointments
After the assessment is complete after the assessment is completed, you can make follow-up appointments with the psychiatrist. The appointment is usually done through a zoom video call. However, in certain circumstances, it might be possible for an audio-only appointment to be conducted (again with an additional cost).
We will then discuss treatment options and choose a bespoke, individualised ADHD medication titration. This will include a review of your medication dosage and a discussion around any adverse effects you may be experiencing. These titration sessions cost PS150 for face-to-face sessions, and PS60 via video or telephone consultation. The pharmacy will charge you for any cost of medication.
The psychiatrist will ask you questions about your family history as well as the effects of your ADHD symptoms on your daily life and any relationship problems or mental health issues that you might be experiencing. This is due to the fact that ADHD is an inheritable condition, and it is essential to examine any family history that could indicate that you're at risk of developing the disorder.

If you'd like to begin treatment immediately you can start treatment immediately following the diagnosis. You can also wait for two weeks before considering the implications of the diagnosis and the options available to you.
We suggest that if you are unsure about your preferences, you talk with your GP prior to scheduling your private appointment. Some providers have different guidelines regarding whether or not they require the submission of a GP letter. We also advise that you check whether your GP accepts a "Shared Care Agreement that means that once discharged from the clinic, you will be returned to them for the prescription for medication.
Medication
For many who wish to obtain an official diagnosis of ADHD, medication is a crucial part of their journey. Getting a prescription from an NHS psychiatrist can be a hassle and lengthy. NHS waiting lists are notoriously long and GPs may be reluctant to refer patients on to specialist services.
Inquiring your GP to refer you to Right to Choose is one way to avoid this (see psychiatry UK and ADHD 360). This means that you can select one that provides an assessment and titration. This can help you reduce time and be more convenient, particularly if you have a busy work schedule.
If you are referred, your clinician will examine your condition to determine if you require medication titration. You will be asked to fill out forms that vary by provider but the main ones are self-report questionnaires and medical histories from childhood to adulthood. These forms will assist your doctor to determine if there are reasons that suggest you shouldn't take ADHD medication, even when they've been prescribed.
If you are titrated, the medication will consist of a mixture of stimulants and non-stimulant drugs. These will be thoroughly tested and monitored to find the right combination for you. The titration can be a lengthy process and may require several extra appointments before your dose is stable.
The frequency of your follow-up appointments is contingent on the type and quantity of medication that you are taking. They can be monthly or quarterly. In this case the titration will be included in the consultation cost. The medication will then be provided through an individual prescription. This could cost more than an NHS prescription as the pharmacy will charge for the medication.
